 Really bad value

I don't normally bother to write reviews so i'll keep it short and to the point, but i'm kind of shocked by the experience we just had at santos.
it's actually the 2nd time we went, the last time only a few days ago - at the time i thought the prices were reasonably extravagant - at around $36 for a
steak you'd expect something more like the quality of baguette in ascot - but it's close to home so we accepted this.
the decor is dated, and furnishings a little like you'd find in a beer garden, not such a problem if the food is ok, which the first night mine was - a pizza
is hard to get too bad and it wasn't wood fired quality, but still nice. my girlfriends veal lacked a lot of flavour and we vowed on the next visit we'd try
something different.
the money grubbing was a little evident on this night though, with no still water available, only coles bottled water at a price, and a small margarita for
$17.
at the end of the night the meal was charged at 'an even $100' which seemed odd, and i still don't know if this is right because no receipt was given.
anyway, tonight we were feeling lazy and since i had enjoyed my pizza and my girlfriend was the one suggesting to return, we decided to revisit with the
kids.
this time the 'hidden costs' were amplified. the manager gave kids menus to the kids and then when the food came gave our older boy an adult serve at
additional cost.
he offered us bread to start which at many a fine establishment such as baguette is complimentary, was we discovered lately charged to us, though we weren't
advised it would be. to add to this, they made the decision that with the kids there, we would need two. both charged.
the kids food came, simple fare for $14 a meal - spaghetti bolognese and mini (very, very small for $14) pizza - like 6 inches.
then the adult meals came and my girlfriend was told 'our new chef made you the wrong sauce. it's still very nice, hope it's ok'.
we were shocked. in 99 out of 100 restaurants the chef would have been made to do it again - we could imagine gordon ramsey in a kitchen nightmares episode
shaking his head and swearing. my girlfriend doesn't even eat tomatoes and the steak was smothered in it. she didn't eat one bite.
my steak was seriously undercooked - blood everywhere and i'd ordered medium-well. that and a toothpick embedded deep in the meat stabbed my mouth. a warning
would have been nice for this.
as we got up to leave the manager and owner apologized for the wrong sauce and offered us a 2 minute 'quick to cook' takeaway pasta - we declined and said we
had to get the children home to bed.
at the cash register he told us it would be $166. i raised an eyebrow and said, does that include the steak. he said, 'oh.. ok.. just make it $146 then'.
i paid this and marched out not happy. the steak was valued at $36 and he'd deducted $20, obviously of the mindset that his very late offer of a replacement
pasta somehow made it our fault for not accepting it.
we will never ever go back there. i would strongly recommend that you think twice before wasting your money as well.
although the affable italian personality shines through in the owner, the value and attention to detail will only leave you feeling as if you should have
stuck to eagle boys for 1/5th the price and some sort of recourse if they failed at giving you what you had ordered in the first place. 2/10

 Unfair reviews

We have eaten regularly at santos and have seen posted reviews. we have always enjoyed our meals and can't fault the service either. floor staff do change frequently but the long time staff are great. you can't perfection if its the waiters first night. the regular staff literally run all night and keep it all flowing. seems nasty and unfair to be so rude about new staff. maybe thats why they seem to have someone new every week. the permanant waitress is great at her job but she can't look after the whole restaurant on her own. lighten up whingers and give them a chance.

Not as bad as reviews say

We originally went after seeing bad reviews just to see. pleasantly surprised. the staff very friendly and go out of their way to help. food was fine. wait time was what we'd expect on a busy night but our waitress kept her eye on us and kept us informed as to the status of meals. we go fairly often now.

Santos restaurantis great to go to where you dont have to dress up. thefood is tops and genuine italian.
the staff are friendly and we have had only good times and experience there
we will be back
