 Worst fish we have ever had

Red emperor was so overcooked it was like an old old chicken that had been boiled. we will never go back again. i wanted to take off the 1 star and have no points for anything but the system wouldn't let me.

The fish was disgusting, soggy, badly filited. we called ahead and the order taker couldn't understand my order, my namer or my number. in the end i was at the store and they where calling out a name that didn't reflect mine at all. value for money is extremely poor, overpriced compared to the quality. my tip, just drive the extra 5 min and go to johnny's.

My partner and i regularly source our dinner from mermaids, about twice/month. we live in victoria park, and mermaids is the best fish & chip shop near us by a wide margin. someimtes they take a while, because they are usually quite busy, but it is worth the wait.
the quality and falvour of the fish varies from good to great, as do the chips. the squid rings and burgers are always great.

Oh dear ... i read the previous review, & thought, maybe it was just a bad night for that person? - but, alas ... they were pretty well on the money. it was a very average experience for $30 for 2 people. the fish was supposed to be snapper? but, it was very thick & rubbery! not nice fish at all!! someone commented on the dim sims on a previous review, so we included 2 of these ... they were marathon dim sims deep fried?! nothing special there at all!! too much salt! the potato cakes were nice & thin & soft inside, crispy on the outside - these were the best part of the meal - the rest went to the seagulls!! (& the menu?! you can't read it with the colour printing they have?! staff were very friendly & courteous! batter was nice.

I just had some fish, calamari, prawn, and chips and it was terrible. the fish and chips were greasy, the calamari overcooked, prawns were dry. overall the meal was supposed to be for 3 adults and we got 2 of each fish, small prawns and small calamari rings, which was not enough for 3 adults. i asked for chips for 3 adults and recieved enough for 1 person. i would not recommend this place. i am just so disapointed as i was looking foward to having seafood.

Just a note - the review below must be quite old. i've been visiting mermaids for a few years now and the food is great. portion sizes are good but not huge, batter is crispy and light, chips are golden and crunchy (never a limp chip!) the piece de resistance (if you like that sort of thing) is the dim sim, which they intermittently double batter deep fry - they're delicious on a normal day but on when their double-battered, they're divine.
the service is always prompt and friendly - it's a busy place on any evening, so try calling ahead to order and avoid the wait.
the atmosphere is better than your average fish and chip takeaway but you're not really there to sit and eat-in. the foreshore's a few steps away and packs all the atmosphere in one glittering skyline punch (just remember the mozzie spray).

Service at the place is fine so i'm not faulting that. the service was quick, prompt and friendly. we got the family pack and i upgraded the fish to red emperor. when the food came out i could see that the squid rings were of the frozen sort so were therefore as chewy as a silicon seal. i passed over my share of the rings to my missus as i found them inedible. the chips were of the standard fare but had an unusual taste, i can only explain they tasted like old lard that had been used more than 1 too many times, another thing i couldn't eat. next up came the fish i was hoping it had been cooked in some different fat but alas it had the same flavour like old lard. it was absolutely disgusting when i got outside i almost vomitted twice. call me fussy, as my partner ate hers as she was quite hungry, but i couldn't stomach it call me a fussy pom. but this place would be advised to change their cooking oil which i suspect is lard once in awhile. so is this the worst fish and chips in perth? so far it is.
