 Poor service - saving grace is fantastic food

The food at the malayan is exceptional. however, the service is quite poor. phoned them on a saturday night to place an order for pick up (at 7.45pm) and ordered just a soup. was told by the guy on the phone that he would have to check with the kitchen. he then told me that the kitchen wasn't taking anymore orders, that they were backlogged and couldn't serve us soup! ridiculous! last time i dined there, they were slow to bring us drinks, sat us in the cold area (there is a room that they have added on at the back), when there were at least 15 other tables that were free in the proper, carpeted indoor area, wouldn't leave us with a jug of water (only received a glass each person and just the general demeaner of the staff (especially the female manageer who is rude to not only customers but the young kids they hire)!

 Different every time

Malayan orchid is an absolute gem. chef/ owner bobby yam is very versatile. nominally the cuisine is malaysian, but diverse and adaptable; there are thai influences, cantonese, indian. for something different, we tried australian bush-type tucker cooked the asian way - they have crocodile, camel, emu - what an inspiration.
we have been a number of times, and will keep going back. bobby will aslo personalise dishes to your liking.
we love the atmosphere here - on view hill - an arty strip in the middle of town - the ground floor of an old red brick building - with raw brick walls and interested artefacts.
highly recommended.

Fantastic find!!!

always good to get local recomendations, everyone had asked us to dine at the malayan, saying it was the best in bendigo.
we were not dissappointed. the restaurant was extremely busy on our arrival, and without a booking we were asked to take a seat while the manageress set up a table so that we could be accommodated. our group was seated promptly, impressed by the hospitality and level of personal service we had already recieved.
we were not dissappointed at all throughout the evening. our group consisted of friends with allergies and quite invoved dietry requests. these were all catered to with professional ease, and swift service.
the wine list is extensive and the manageress was knowledgable with varieties, and recommendations for food matching.
at all times the staff were helpful , polite and attentive . the food was deliscious,with our friends so happy that they have booked a return visit on their next trip to bendigo. this is of the highest praise in itself!
well done bendigo a hidden gem.

Always a fantastic experience

My whole family have been enjoying the malayan orchid since it opened in bendigo many moons ago. the food is fantastic, the service has always been exemplary and the atmosphere very enjoyable. bobby (head chef and co-owner) has a varied menu that often introduces new elements to enjoy. we all find it hard to go past our favourites but the quality of cooking has encouraged a lot of experimentation, always with great results. he even provides a special dish for my nan who can't eat anything with spice in it - this is done with no fuss whatsoever. pam (manager and co-owner) has always been a friendly and efficient host, ensuring our comfort and a meal to remember. there's a reason we continue to regularly patronise this restaurant - it really is great dining.

I have eaten at this restaurant twice now and the food is just delicious. i have had no issues with the service and it wasn't as pricey as i was expecting, so that was a bonus. definitely recommend.

What a magnificent restaurant to have in bendigo. the food was just wonderful. ask the chef for his hand prepared banquet and see what wonders he brings. yes it is a bit more expensive, but wow! the wine list is extensive and should fill the expectations of everyone. ask the staff for something and it comes. don't go here if you want a quickie meal - you are wasting your time and the wonderful food.
we savoured the whole experience. well done. we will be back for sure.

 Fantastic!! a regional find!

The malayan orchid has alot of potential and provides an enjoyable dining experience which is refreshing in the bendigo region.
- we found the food to be of metrolpolitan standard - it is unique and caters for many different palates. there is food for the adventurous (kangaroo, emu, delicious duck!) and the old favourites (lemon chicken, mongolian beef). our favourites included the nonya duck, which was tender and very flavoursome!!
- service could be improved (staff were very young) however we found the female manager very pleasant and accomodating (not rude as previous and perhaps sensitive diners have noted). water was filled without requesting and meals were served steaming hot!
-desserts were delicious and the wine list is extensive with alot to offer.
we definitely reccomend the malayan orchid to out of towners. bendigo provides very little fine dining experiences and this restaurant is now part of our family institution!!!

i agree with the previous review, that the malayan orchid does have potential to become a great asian restaurant, however a change in managemnt and training of staff would need to take place.
our night with a table a 6 started off at 530pm, informing 2 staff that we have to gone by 8pm. after sitting for 20mins and only 2 people getting water (and not other drinks which we ordered), i got menus myself informing another wait person that we had to be gone by 8pm.
they took our order quick around 6pm, and the order was a standard banquet meal (we 'thought' that would be quick and easy, how wrong we were)
entrees and drinks came pronto, the service after was disgusting. plates were left on the table when the other food finally arrived. drinks had to be asked for at least twice. the rice was cold, and dishes that were supposed to come out never did. after informing 2 more staff of our intent to leave at 8pm, and after re-ordering drinks we already ordered, and we weren't 'allowed' to have a water jug at the table... it was 750pm.
after talking to many staff we asked to have the coffee and no dessert to make things go quicker... we were informed that the banquet price would remain the same even though we were not having dessert.
i saw the manager walk past who was very selective on being very 'merry and talkative' to 2 selective tables the whole night... i informed her that we had to leave in 10mins, and if we could just get our coffee that would be great. she stated "you didn't tell us you had a deadline"... as she was walking off already. i replied back "i have informed 4 of your staff about our dealine"... and to this the manager gave me a dirty look and walked off.
and once again i agree with the above reviwer... if you're planning on having a good night out do yourself a favour and avoid malayan orchid. a 15yo at maccas would give you better service than their manager.

Where to start!! - what a treasure trove. our first dinning experience here but definately not the last. scrumptious meal, friendly professional service, value for money, busy yet personal atmosphere - this restaurant is an absolute gem. do your senses a favour and order the duck!!!!sensational!!!
