Humble but enjoyable
|
My family and i went out for a meal last night to celebrate my sister's birthday. we'd never been to fishtales cafe before, so we decided to give it a try as we'd been frequenting many of the same restaurants for a while, now. i did see the negative reviews shortly before we left so i was a little concerned but i was willing to give the place a shot. i was quite pleased with the entire experience. it wasn't quite as nice as many other restaurants, but it was cheaper, too. the service was great. the waitress was very friendly, she had a less formal but very honest and down to earth style of service which was quite nice. kind of like you were at a family friend's rather than a cafe. the actual presentation of the sitting area left a bit to be desired, however there was some good jazz playing which was relaxing and welcoming. the menu was huge, you'd be hard pressed to not be able find something you'd like. parents with fussy kids should appreciate this. my mother and brother are gluten and lactose intolerant, and they had their needs facilitated to very well. everyone enjoyed their meals, not quite at the level of restaurant quality i'm used to, but once again not priced that high, either. serving portions were a wee bit on the generous side, but not a ridiculously overwhelming amount, either. we were welcome to take anything we didn't finish with us. the bill was $114 for the five of us. for 5 full meals and 5 drinks, that was quite reasonable.
overall, a pleasant experience and i would happily go there again.

Good food is hard to find...
|
I was a regular customer for quite a while until the service became poor and the meals unedible.
i'm a big fan of carbonara and the first time i ate it here, it was amazing, of course it was only down hill after that. carbonara is meant to have a light, creamy sauce... not a thick, cheesy, bright yellow, curry tasting sauce, nor is it meant to have disgustingly large chunks of onion.but despite all the above, the main thing that really started to peeve me off is the pasta to sauce ratio, i would finish the pasta, still have a full bowl of sauce and leave hungry and dissatisfied.
i don't recommend it or the fish (but thats another story).

Not happy
|
Called ahead and booked a table for four at one of two tables by the window..when we arrived told to pick any table we wanted however the table we booked was already occupied. when i stated to the waitress we rang and specifally requested a table she was most dismissive and said " oh i didn't realise i thought you could pick any table" what's the point of calling ahead and requesting a table if they are going to ignore you??very disappointed with flippant attitude.

Not impressed...
|
I found a bug in my lettuce, which they decide is so crucial to garnish on every single meal - why, i just don't know... the coffee is consistently burnt. the majority of the art work i find to be quite alluring however the gigantic portrait of what i assume to be the owners, is not only unattractive to the naked eye, also off putting and just merely disturbing i guess i just find it very unessential, it also attracts flies. the wildlife outside (which you may find somewhat appealing on the rare sunny days in this po-dunk town) are ravenous vicous beasts that should not be eating your meal every time you look away! also not digging the hippy vibe bro. the price is ridiculous for what you get however to end on a positive note, at least there's breakfast all day and there's one decent waiter although he is obscenely tall and has very thick eyebrows.

A must to eat at.
|
2nd year that we have found fishtales to be fantastic. has become one of my favorite places to eat anywhere. being a carnivore with a vegie girlfriend and 2 fussy kids we all walk away happy. bills have been between $60 and $80 including a number of beers and spiders which i think is terrific value.

Fishtales is an amazing place just to catch up with everyone, their food is just wonderful and there is so much on the menu its good to know you can go there and order something different everytime or stick to the favourites! the waiters/waitresses are so friendly and seem to really enjoy their job which is exactly what we want to see! there prices are great and affordable for everyone, my 18 year old goes there all the time with her friends and knows she wont put to much of a dint in her pocket but can still enjoy a great meal! love it, will continue going back there on a frequent basis!

Yummo
|
I've been going to fishtales for years, and love that i can walk in to beaming smiles, known by name and have my coffee brought to me without needing to ask.
on top of this the staff are friendly and show a genuine interest in their patrons! the bryan specials are always worth a try, and the bubbly waitress with the eyebrow stud is an absolute darling!
eat there, drink there, meet there, try it.

Great food, fantastic atmosphere
|
Massive, massive menu with pretty much everything you can imagine. fish'n'chips, thai curries, stir-fries, steaks, amazing burgers and a huge range of vego options. (vegetarians - try the falafel burger... soooo good.)
really friendly staff, the atmosphere is very chilled out and the back courtyard is beautiful on a sunny day.
i am a warrnambool local and i have become completely addicted to 'tales' for its freindly vibe and amazing food.
check it out, you won't be disappointed.

Great food with very poor service.
|
The food is always good, but after todays experience,i'd never go there again! when we arrived we waited 20 minutes to be given a menu, another 30 minutes before our order was taken, then an hour later we still hadn't gotten our meals.we did get coffee and our empty cups sat on the table for 40 minutes or so.everyone that came in after us were served and had their meals and we hadn't.in the end we paid for our coffee and left without eating. i think an hour and a half to wait for banana pancakes and bacon and eggs is far too long. and in that hour and a half we weren't approached once to say sorry for the wait or offered another drink or anything. it's very disappointing, especially as we had been dining there quite regularly.very poor indeed!!!
