Where to start? i knew from the moment we walked in that we were in for a treat. it has been a long time since a waiter/waitress pulled the chair out for me or placed the napkin in my lap, but this is exactly what happened at captain john's. our friendly waitress informed us of the soup of the day, left the menus and took our drink order. beer glass was chilled for hubby's beer and my pineapple dacquari was perfect.
now for the food.
garlic & herb bread....the dough is infused with garlic & herbs and then cooked in a heavy iron pot making it soft on the inside and crusty on the outside...perfect bread.
mushroom soup....fresh, thick & creamy, served with a fresh bread roll....best mushroom soup i have ever had....even better than my mum's (sorry mum).
1/2 dozen oysters kilpatrick...big, juicy oysters with bacon and a very nice sauce.
lobster mornay....lobster pieces covered in a tasty mornay sauce....so yummy.
scotch fillet laid on creamy mash and topped with prawns....cooked to perfection and finished with an extremely tasty sauce, so tasty in fact that i cleaned the sauce from hubby's plate with my bread.
steamed vegies....medley of fresh, crunchy, tasty seasonal vegies....1 bowl between 2 is plenty.
panna cotta with coconut and lemongrass....omg this is the best panna cotta ever....different, but so nice.
sticky date pudding....fresh and warm with a very tasty sauce.
we finished the evening off with a flat white (hubby was driving), while i had a jamaican coffee, which was made just right.
this was certainly a dining experience to remember and one which will we do again very soon.

We have been holidaying at merimbula for many years. we always book at captain john's seafood restaurant for the first night that we arrive and often go back again before we leave quite often bringing friends including children for our second visit. this is an excellent restaurant. the setting is good. the menu is great (must have the potted bread) and the food is excellent.
the staff and owners who bring this all together are top class making the atmosphere also excellent. i am about to book for dinner for our next stay shortly. we know it will not fail us.
a must on your culenary travel plans.

We had a lunch there. it was great. the oyster was terrific. the dishes was presented beautifully as well as the taste. the price was cheap compared with melbourne.

As a chef myself, dinning at this little restaurant in merimbula called captian johns seafoord restaurant was just simply a real pleasure. the food was faultless, the service was 2nd. to none, and a great feel. now reading a comment from the person with the fussy little kid.now mate, as a chef myself i would like to know 1, did you make a booking? 2, if so, did you ask if it was possible for the chef to make something for your fussy little child? as i know from looking through the window that there is only 1 chef there, so ask yourself this.......would you like it if someone came to a restaurant where yourself and your wife were dinning, and the chef had to stop your meal, and everyone esle in the restaurant to cook for a fussy little kid.
all i can say to the guys at captain johns seafood restaurant is keep doing what you are doing, as i and i am sure many others will be back......

Don't take your kids there!

We have a fussy 6yo daughter who has presented many restaurants around the country and overseas with catering challenges, including some very swank silver service establishments that you might expect to be fussy about the sort of troublesome patrons they serve. however, we have never been told to go elsewhere rather than a restaurant make some attempt to cater for our daughter's tastes! but that was what happened at captain johns seafood restaurant on sunday night, the officious waitress adding "that's the way it's always been, if we make an exception [to the menu] for one person, we'd have to make it for everyone". hmmm, can't have the patrons dictating the service, can we?! we ended up going around the corner and spending $100 at a restaurant we'd spent similar money at the night before. so, can't really comment on the food, but definitely don't take your kids there!
